Mite Vs Skill Development Program
Mite vs. Skill Development Program Overview
For the upcoming season, the Skill Development and Mite programs will be structured to better support the growth of young players at all stages of development. Here's what families can expect:
Skill Development Program
This year, Skill Development will be split into two separate groups:
- Learn to Skate
- Schedule: Mondays & Saturdays
- Focused on basic skating fundamentals for brand-new skaters. This will include some time with sticks and pucks!
- Learn to Play
- Schedule: Wednesdays & Saturdays
- Designed for players who have a basic skating foundation and are ready to start learning hockey skills.
All Skill Development participants will receive a stick and jersey as part of the program.
Group placement (between Learn to Skate and Learn to Play) will be determined by the coaching staff to ensure each child is in the most appropriate environment for their development.
Movement into the Mite Program must be approved by both the coaches and parents, and must be finalized before December 20th.
Mite Program
The Mite Program will be the USA Hockey Red, White and Blue model which combines 6U and 8U players, but will be split into three skill-based levels, each with its own dedicated practice time to provide targeted instruction.
- Practice Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays
- Games: Saturdays
- Additional Play: Select tournaments throughout the season, including the Betty Beckman (Coaches and Team Managers will select additional tournaments at the beginning of the season so parents can plan appropriately)
- Included in Registration: Team socks (kept), practice jersey (returned) and game jersey (returned) and participation in the Betty Beckman Tournament
- Teams will be formed at each level to ensure appropriate competition and continued development.
- Practice groups within each skill division (red, white, and blue) will be broken down further into skill groups within that division to ensure players are competing at the appropriate level for proper development.
This structure allows players to develop at their own pace while providing clear progression from learning to skate all the way through full participation in the Mite program.
